Centropa Summer Academy | Scholarship Guidelines

the Duke University Center for International Studies
invites scholarship applications for NC K-12 educators participating
in the 2014 Centropa Summer Academy

 The Duke Center for European Studies is committed to creating, through its continued collaboration with Centropa, opportunities for pedagogical innovation in the teaching of European history for K-12 educators in North Carolina.

 Centropa Summer Academy

Centropa’s eighth annual summer academy will take place in Vienna and Sarajevo from July 9-17, 2014.  You will meet and work with 65 teachers from 14 countries, walk the streets of history, work on lessons to bring back to your students, create cross-cultural projects with teachers in Europe or Israel, and study with top scholars. See attached flyer and program for more details.

Please complete the CSA application, available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CSA2014USA, by Friday, April 25. Applicants will be notified of the award by May 1, 2014.


Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

  • Must teach in North Carolina
  • Must be teachers of 6th grade students or older
  • Preference will be given to educators teaching in lower-income schools
  • Upon return from the CSA, teachers must:
    • Provide a testimonial about his/her participation in the CSA and its professional development impact.
    • Demonstrate the implementation of the curricular units or projects developed during the CSA in their classroom, either by submitting a video, or lesson plans with photographs.
Funding

The scholarship amount is $3,500. This will cover airfare (from Charlotte or RDU airport to Vienna; and from Sarajevo to Charlotte or RDU airport). The remaining amount* will go towards in-country expenses such as cultural excursions, hotel, ground transportation, meals, and materials.

 *In-country expenses are estimated to be 150 euros (or $210)/day.  Depending on airfare, the scholarship may or may not cover all in-country expenses. In the event that it does not, participants will be responsible for the remaining fees to Centropa.

Centropa (www.centropa.org) is an international historical institute that develops educational materials based on stories of 20th century Central European Jewish life for teachers to use to explore civic values, tolerance, global citizenship, and students’ own stories.

The Duke Council for European Studies (CES: www.jhfc.duke.edu/ces) aims to encourage interdisciplinary study, debate and discussion regarding Europe. The CES sponsors and coordinates events and speakers, hosts visitors, and subsidizes European-focused scholarly activities at Duke and in Europe.  It has a strong presence in the regional seminars network and collaborates closely with international scholars and partner institutions.  

The Duke University Center for International Studies (DUCIS: http://ducis.jhfc.duke.edu/) is one of twelve federally funded National Resource Centers in International Studies. DUCIS seeks to promote internationalization across Duke’s campus and beyond.  As an NRC, it is committed to supporting development of international studies curriculum, enhancing the teaching and study of less-commonly taught languages, developing outreach efforts, funding library acquisitions, and most broadly deepening our understanding of critical global issues.
